Have you ever had a job where you had to convince yourself to go in the mornings? Have you ever laid there in your bed and wished you could quit that job? We understand the feeling. If you’ve ever been bored, unfulfilled, or just plain tired of going to your same job every day, you might want to look into getting a career instead. So, what’s the difference?
Job vs. Career
CareerWise explains that the difference between a job and a career can be influenced by your attitude. So you have to ask yourself, what is your attitude about your current job? If you’re feeling negative toward your job, you should probably look for something that will make you happier.
A more technical difference between a job and career is also the ratio of effort to reward. “Jobs” typically pay less, whereas careers can often pay higher, and can be more rewarding. In a job you might just be staying there because you need the money. With a career that you love, you have the chance to enjoy going to work each day, and as you advance, money could become less and less of a worry.
J.D. Roth, from Get Rich Slowly, suggests that “A job has minimal impact on your future work life, while a career provides experience and learning to fuel your future,” which means that your career could help you progress and learn new skills. Lou Schultz understands that one of the four basic human fulfillment needs is to continue to learn. By continuing to progress and learn new skills, our performance and happiness grows.
How to Know if You’re in a Career
Careers can be anything that allows you to grow and advance. Careers help you improve yourself and provide you with valuable life experiences. By attending a trade school you could learn new skills and processes which can better enable you to obtain a career. Others simply start at the bottom of the tier and work their way to the position they want to be in. As long as you continue to progress, you know you’ve found a career.
Careers should also be enjoyable. No one wants to wake up each day and think of all the reasons you should keep your job. You’ll be much happier as you wake up excited to go to work and enjoy yourself all day. As you learn new things and gain new experiences, you will find that your overall happiness is greater.
Getting a Career
Now that you know you want to work towards a career instead of a job, it’s time to start finding the path toward your goal. Start with what you want to do. Do you have a natural talent and interest in automotive technology and cars? If you do have that natural talent, can you turn your interest into a career? As you consider these questions, remember that you can always start small and progress into the career that you want. That’s the point of choosing something you enjoy.
